As for truthfulness (sidq), ALLAH (Exalted is He) says:

[Taubah 9:119] O People who Believe! Fear Allah, and be with the truthful.

“Be among the truthful” because the one who sits with someone is influenced for good and evil. Nature is a thief. A man copies the one he mixes with a lot, even if he is not aware of it. Tarafa said,

Do not ask about a man. Ask about his close companions.
Every man imitates his close companions.

This is the best path to travel for someone who wants to discipline himself. It is to mix with the perfect man so that his nature and good habits flow to him. The influence of actions is absolutely stronger than the influence of words.

Al-Qushayri radi allahu anhu noted, “Truthfulness is the basis of the matter and it is made perfect by it, and it is commanded.” He said, “The least truthfulness is when what is secret and what is public are the same.”

TRUTHFULNESS

Islam has laid much stress on abstaining from falsehood especially from telling a lie. Almighty Allah says: “O you who believe! Be afraid of Allah, and be with those who are true (in words and deeds). “(9:119)

The Holy Quraan enjoins: “And shun lying speech”. (22:30)

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: Whoever does not give up false statements (i.e. telling lies), and evil deeds, and speaking bad words to others, Allah is not in need of his (fasting) leaving his food and drink. (Bukhari)

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) reported that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “The worst people in the Sight of Allah  on the Day of Resurrection will the double-faced people who appear to some people with one face and to other people with another face.” (Bukhari)

Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Mas’ood (radi Allahu anhu) reported that Allah’s Apostle (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: Be steadfast as truthfulness leads to virtue and virtue leads to Paradise. And keep away from lie as it leads to evil doing and evil doing leads to Hell.

Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibne-Omar (radi Allahu anhuma) reported that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “When a person tells a lie, his guardian Angels runs away from him to a distance of one mile.”

Sayyiduna Anas (radi Allahu anhu) reported that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “If a person abstains from false talks, a house is built for him on the edge of Paradise and if a person gives up fighting, even if he is on a right stand, a house is built for him in the middle of Paradise and if a person cherishes good conduct, a house is built for him in the highest portion of Paradise.” (Tirmidi)

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Keep away from false talk, as falsehood is against Imaan.” (Ahmad)

Sayyiduna Abdullah (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Holy Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. And a man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person. Falsehood leads to wickedness and evil doing, and wickedness leads to the Hell Fire, and a man may keep on telling lies till he is written before Allah, a liar. (Bukhari)

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Apostle of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: The signs of a hypocrite are three: Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie, and whenever he promises, he breaks his promise; and whenever he is entrusted, he betrays (proves to be dishonest). (Bukhari)

Sayyiduna Samara bin Jundub (radi Allahu anhu) reported that Allah’s Apostle (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: I saw (in a dream), two men came to me. They said, The person, the one whose cheek you saw being torn away (from the mouth to the ear) was a liar and used to tell lies and the people would report those lies on his authority till they spread all over the world. So he will be punished like that till the Day of Resurrection. (Bukhari)
